MLHS Bring Your Own Device Policy:
All students are required to have a classroom technology device. Teachers will be making use of technology and internet resources in their curriculum. If a student does not have a device, they will miss out on valuable classroom activities and may need to use lab or home computers outside of class time. When selecting a technology device parents should consider the following guidelines:
Recommended devices: Full laptop computers running supported versions Windows or Apple OS.
Acceptable devices: Chromebooks, iPads, tablets running Android or Windows with screens of at least 7 inches and a keyboard.
Unacceptable devices: Smartphones, iPods, MP3 players, tablets smaller than 7 inches or without a keyboard.
Additionally, all devices need to have Chrome web browser installed. Devices should be malware and virus free. Devices should be brought to school fully charged. Families with multiple students in the school may borrow a laptop for use during the school day.
MLHS provides access to low cost laptops:
Students at MLHS have the option to purchase computers through Minnesota Computers for Schools. In partnership with the Stillwater Correctional Facility, MCFS employs and trains inmates to refurbish and recycle computers donated from businesses. Data is scrubbed from the computer, in compliance with the Department of Defense standards, in a secure building by staff before the equipment arrives inside the prison. The refurbished computers are sold to schools and educational nonprofits for a nominal fee. Each computer is customized for the school’s needs and comes with a warranty and tech support.
MLHS typically puts together an order in August. Families are emailed with specific details about the types of computers available and the order due date. Recent laptops have been Windows 10 machines with i5 processors and 8 GB RAM. Prices range between $150 and $250 per laptop. The laptops come with a 3-year warranty.
