Guidance
Notes for students:
Seniors: Now is the time to act on more specific plans for the future. Pray and determine the best post-high school experience. Most Colleges and Universities need a decision by December 15th in order to offer you the best available financial assistance or athletic, music, or fine arts scholarships. Official due dates vary by institution so check their websites or contact them. The FAFSA is open to complete on October 1 through May. There are many scholarship and financial aid opportunities available and it is up to the student to search these. Those who have not yet taken the ACT test should take it first semester. It is time to write resumes and college application essays and get ready for your next steps!
Juniors: Let's establish your goals, both immediate and long term. Use the information you've learned about the gifts, talents, skill set, and passions the Lord gave you to guide you toward your post-high school path. After defining those, answering these four questions:
1. Do I prefer a Christian or secular experience?
2. Does distance from home play a role? If so, how close or far matters?
3. Do I prefer a large school or small school environment?
4. What career path am I pursuing?
Use your answers to those questions to guide your college search and narrow it to your top 3-5.Begin researching, contacting, and visiting these colleges (we recommend college visits be completed by the end of your Junior year) and completing applications and transcript requests to your top 3-5. We also recommend taking the ACT test during your Junior year. There are already scholarship opportunities available for you. Sites like FASTWEB.com and CAPPEX.com are recommended search aides for scholarships. Remember, it's never too early.
Sophomores: It is time to sharpen those study skills and plan ahead for what career you would like to pursue. Let's talk about your goals and plans. Sophomores take the ASVAB skills test to discover their God-given skills, talents, and passions that can lead toward potential careers and ministries. They also attend ACE Career Day in Fairmont to learn about potential careers and what kinds of education they'll need to pursue those careers. By the end of the Sophomore year, students can be researching potential colleges that offer those careers.
Freshmen: Now is the time to get you on the path to success, create valuable study skills for life, and continue to learn about the gifts and talents God put inside you! Let's discuss your goals are, both immediate and long term and establish a plan on how MLHS can help you reach those goals.
